About

Saara Tatjana Nelson

By the time I was 11 years old, I had moved eight times. My mother Finnish and father British, I moved between two identities regularly, trying to fit into each culture, yet always feeling on the outside. My life experience has been that of searching and longing to belong and put down my roots. I threw myself into music, dance and drama and this was a way of connecting when language failed me. I spent long summers in the forests of Finland and found a way to connect with nature when my own sense of belonging was lost.

My 'therapeutic' journey started in Amsterdam in the late 90's where I first discovered Body Mind Centering (BMC) and Authentic Movement with Patricia Bardi, a leading BMC practitioner. This planted a seed to which I came back to later in life. I was always fascinated by the body and its expression. I fell in love with exploring the expressive self through voice, physical theatre and being embodied. I studied all types of movement from Bharatanatyam (a theatrical Indian dance form) to Capoeira, embodiment (skinner release to yoga), music and theatre; I performed, directed, and taught in Britain and Finland. I gained my first MA in Applied Theatre at Central School of Speech and Drama. As my experience deepened and grew, my journey eventually brought me to Bristol to study Dance Movement Psychotherapy (DMP).

I graduated as a DMP in 2015 and have worked therapeutically using the arts with many different client groups in various settings, e.g. in palliative care, with children and adults with special/profound educational, emotional, learning and physical needs, with students during lockdown, in various mental health settings, in primary schools, and adult education centres. I continue to work with different client groups and in private practice. I love working with people to help reconnect them to themselves, the fascinating world around us, and to each other.

I have always kept up my creative and expressive outlets in theatre, music and dance in one way or another. Currently I sing and play in a folk duo called Kan Koth and work for Golden Thread â€‹Playback theatre company as a musician for performance. I am also a theatre director for a small theatre company called The Living Room Theatre Company. I dance Argentine Tango.

Life is a deeply creative and fulfilling journey, and I am delighted and humbled to help and hold anyone else's journey.

Therapeutic Focus

Integrative Arts Psychotherapy

I am an Integrative Humanistic Arts (Dance, Drama, Music) Psychotherapist and a long-time member of ADMP (Association of Dance Movement Psychotherapists). I am attachment and trauma-informed and proficient in understanding the body/mind/spirit as instruments of self-expression.

With a vast background in Community Arts - theatre, dance and music, I am able to tap into various mediums to respond to the individual creative needs of a client. I use metaphor, sandtray, art, nature, movement and story as possible interventions.

I am interested in relationships and how to work with attachment trauma, how we can develop strong and healthy bonds with ourselves and others. The work begins with the self and our own journeys into finding healthy relationships with all parts of our selves. How can we best serve positive relationship in general so it penetrates into all relationships in our lives. I have taught, performed and danced Argentine Tango for many years and use this with couples work.

Because of my own journey with Belonging and Landing, I am particularly interested in guiding and helping anyone who feels overwhelmed and lost and without a home. In today's transient world, it can be hard to find your 'place', your 'home'. I will help you find a way to land, firmly with feet on the ground, finding stillness and a peace within.

I have been working with somatic and embodied presence for over 20 years. I have been inspired in my practice by Authentic Movement, Body Mind Centering (BMC), meditation and mindfulness, yoga, the Franklin Method, Argentine tango, Traditional Chinese medicine, and Qigong.
